In Fall 2025, community advocates came together to hold three community forums on AI and data centers. But we wanted to do more than just educate our community—we wanted to organize people, so that we could push back against the dystopian trajectory that Big Tech is pushing.

We advocated hard for HB 2515, which would have been a good first step in data center regulation, but Big Tech and the Data Center Coalition flooded Olympia, watered down the bill and ultimately killed it in committee. While lobbyists for Microsoft, Amazon and data center developers camped out in the Capitol, legislators told us “We’re not hearing from our voters on this.”

WA-AIR aims to change that dynamic.

We began supporting local groups fighting data centers in Walla Walla, Tri Cities, and Wenatchee. And then the Seattle Times reported that there were five new hyperscale data centers proposed for Seattle—not something we had foreseen. We drove over 100,000 emails to the Mayor and City Council; two months later, we had a one-year moratorium, and—even more importantly—a whole lot of people who wanted to help us fight this battle.

So we became, officially, a new organization: Washington AI Resistance. We incorporated as a 501(c)(4) so we could also do political and advocacy work needed to ensure that real regulation is introduced and passed in 2027—regulation not just of data centers, but of AI itself. We’re planning to organize, canvass, call, and protest: whatever we need to do to make sure that elected officials know they will be judged on this.
